Default Effective Odds

Hey all, I thought this was the best place for this post to go. So, I am having some trouble calculating effective odds and just can't really grasp the concept. Could someone give me a couple hand examples to help me out. Thanks...

AJo

board is (J87)T (6BB)

you bet and are raised by an aggressive player. You are getting 9-1 immidiate odds on your turn call. But if you plan on going to showdown you probably have to call a river bet. So, you will end up paying 2 bets to win a total of 10. Your effective odds are 5-1(or 10-2). If you think your hand is good 5-1 you should call down, not 9-1.
