Assuming online poker is illegal would it be legal to take a laptop to a casino hotel room and play poker on it there?

It's illegal for the same reason you can't run a bingo hall or bookie service out of your room.

The only federal courts to opine on the issue have held that online poker does not violate federal law. Online poker likely violates many states' anti-gambling laws, however.
