3/6 or 5/10 at Greektown will guarantee awe, if not a good time.

What does he want to play?

3/6 is only found at Greektown and Windsor (Canada). Motor City charges an extra $1 in rake per hand, but the 5/10 is looser (from what I'm told) than Greektown's because they have no 3/6.

The NL $100 max game is a $6/half hout time charge, but is stupidly loose and filled with people who have no idea houw to play.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I few into Detrock (rock city!) this morning at 7AM for business, and my meetings ended 3 hours earlier than planned. So my associate decided he wanted to watch me play poker for the first time.

POKER???? You mean they pay me to travel to other cities to play POKER???? HELL YEAH!

So then it was down to the choices. I generally play as high as 15/30, but I'm equally at home in a 3/6 game if thats all there is.

Greektown: highest limit is 5/10, sounds too small. Also I couldn't find the place.

Windsor: There was the risk of going across the border into Canada. I know this sounds odd, but I had been considered a "person of interest" due to a mistaken identity problem when I was 21 (I share the same name with a guy in the IRA apparently). I haven't experienced any troubles since before 9-11, but since I am on a deadline to make my flight back to NYC I decided this isn't the wisest idea.

MGM Grand: HUH? I didn't even know this place existed until I drove by it. Do they spread poker here?

Motor City: Since my associate visited this casino last time he was in town just to eat at the buffet (lame) I decided to give this room a shot.

The evening started off on a bad foot because the Mapquest directions I had was for MC's corporate offices, not the actual casino - so I got lost on the way. When we walked into the front entrance I was welcomed by the lovely stench of tobacco. Now this is no ordinary tobacco filled casino, it smells really bad - worse than the Sahara in Vegas. We jumped over to the craps tables because I thought I could teach my associate how to play (keep him occupied) but it was $10 min passline bets - too big for his role. So we separated ways so he can chow down, I instead headed upstairs to the third floor; home of the very well hidden poker room.

The room reminded me of the worst rooms in Vegas, it was run like crap with horrible dealers. In the 1.5 hours I was there I saw 3 1/2 orbits, the dealers are slow as molasses. I am a rather fast player, and one of the dealers looked at me after making my decision very quickly with a "your not from around here" look, which was made worse by the guy in the 2 seat who would wait until it was his turn, think for 30 seconds, then wait until the dealer told him it was ok to proceed with his action. Luckily EVERYONE at the table was a loose passive fish, so I had nothing to complain about!

My game essentially was fold fold fold fold fold fold fold fold. I literally called one time in the entire evening (and took down the pot I might add). I folded every single one of my small blinds pre-flop, and I only played one big blind hand which I then folded on the flop anyway. Its interesting because literally nobody raised at the table at all, except the hands that I was in the big blind. AKs? No raise. Pocket queens? no raise. But then again they would limp in with Q3o so I had nothing to complain about!

Obviously I had developed a reputation for folding pre-flop when everyone else at the table had come to gambool. This reputation served me will as each pot I won was uncontested, where as the hands always almost went to showdown when it was fish against the fish.

Best hand of the evening was 4 limpers to me on the button, I raise with 55 (yes... I will raise the button with pocket pairs with the right table texture), small blind folds, and for the first time of the evening the BB 3-bet. I then saw something I had never seen before - everyone folded back to me. I call, and its 10.5SB on the flop of all low cards. Now here is the best part, BB checks to me, so of course I bet - scowl, shuffle of cards, - call. Turn is a Q, he checks looking very worried, I bet - scowl, shuffle of cards, - call while mumbling something about how he was beat. River is a T and he picks up his cards in disgust, I bet - he scowls, he shuffles, and he mucks. Poker is fun!

Favorite player - the guy who raised every turn if he thought the other player was trying to steal. Of course he always bet the river with nothing, forcing the other fish to show a horribly low hand against his stone cold bluff.

I finished up 6.2 BB in 1.5 hours, so I can't complain. Overall I thought the opponents were a god send, the dealers sucked, and the environment was no better than the worst Vegas rooms, but on the positive side the room is isolated from the main casino floor. Next time I come to Detroit I'll arrive better prepared, and I'll call in my 10/20 seat in advance.

Where do you get the idea that Greektown's highest limit is 5/10? They spread 15/30 and sometimes 20/40 and 30/60.

And if you think Motorcity's room sucks Greektown is twice as bad, but it's three times as big in area (only twice as many tables.)

Guy sitting to my right was a Greektown regular, thats what he told me.

Funniest part of the evening was hearing the floor announce that there was a 50 to 200 Hold'em table starting. I said what the f is that, apparently its a 200 max, 50 min 1-2 NL game. Great way to confuse the customers while making themselves look big.

Second funniest part of the evening was when I asked the floor what the biggest limit game was that they spread. He said 200 NL. I said LIMIT, he said the game plays with 1 & 2 dollar blinds. I again said I'm asking about limit games, so he replied - "Huh?". The floor then explained they will spread any game I want as long as I bring 8 players. A lot of good that will be since I live in NYC

the poker room is pretty much two rooms

one contains 3-6 he, 5-10 he, and a couple stud games

the other room has 1-2 100max nlhe, 2-5-5 nlhe (uncapped i believe), 10-20 he, 15-30 he, 20-40 he (sometimes round-by-round with omaha), sometimes 30-60 he and 50-100 he

a couple days a week 5-10 plo

never been to motorcity, sounds like i probably never will

cheers

Well, sort of. The $50min/$100max NL gets spread on the smoking side (where the 3/6 is, and on the rare occasions they have stud, the stud is there too). The 5/10 is usually split between sides (often if they have a dead table on the non-smoking side they'll put a 5/10 game there).

The 10/20 and up is always on the non-smoking side, as is the big NL/PL games.
