Honestly? Is it close, in your mind? Both times I was thinking that if I flopped my set I would get back 7x what I put in at least, plus the chance to have a huge stack vs not really being crippled if I missed. You'd even fold the first time... with one caller already and only 125 to call? By the time it came around again, so much money in the pot...

I overplay these types of hands. Set-only pairs, suited connectors, suited aces. Call too often preflop I should say, trying to catch the disguised monster. At least I think so, and it sounds like this is an example. I guess part of the reason not to try to hit is a set might not be good anyway, especially if others are drawing at higher sets.

Thoughts?

your implied odds suck. You are playing around with a very large percentage of your stack. With this many in the hand, hitting your set doesn't garuantee a win. Your call the first time around is fine. Your call the second time isn't. Your AI on the flop is just silly - You just hit your miracle card, why are you killing your payout???? To me the flop bet is the worst play of this hand. You have two more streets to get all your money in, and I BET you can do that without ever betting.

the first call is for 175, which more than 1/10 of your stack. and there's some chance it will get reraised (as it did). as csc said, you'll flop a set and lose sometimes.

as for the 2nd call, you have to be pretty sure that there are at least 2 overpairs against you. if you flop a set and they see all 5 cards, the odds they both miss their set is only something like 75%, in addition to the other hands that can beat you. and there's some (low) chance that somebody will reraise pre-flop, which would suck.

on the flop, i'd check. it's an empty side pot, so you aren't going to get a lot of loose calls. the pot's much bigger than your stack - someone will make a bet for you. i wouldn't sweat the free card - not many people will be around with a 7 or 8.

Thanks. That makes sense. At the time I felt like I was protecting the hand against possible straight draws and figured that the overpairs would come along like they did because the pot was so large. Bah, never mind... I could try to justify my play but I'd rather just take the advice. I've read a few of your posts and you seem to be a good player. Thanks again.

Finished 3rd/130 in the tourney even after losing most of the chips won on this hand. (Not entirely a fish). Thanks for comments from those who gave them.
