Default Stem Cell question

web page

In this article talking about the voting on the stem cell bills, it mentions, "They particularly object to its premise that embryonic stem cell research makes use of fertilized eggs that would otherwise be discarded." So does that mean that the people opposed to stem cells would rather see the embryo discarded than used to try to cure disease? If that is the case, I do not understand their position at all. Why would they rather see the egg discarded than used for science?
