Increasingly defenseless
With more and more troops going overseas as well as more and more base closings, we are increasingly open to terrorist and conventional military attacks.
Discuss. Bush admin setting us up for attack |

Re: Increasingly defenseless
I don't see your logic. If we carefully select which bases to close, we will save on a lot of redundancy without hurting our operations.
Are you saying that if you don't live within 50 miles of a military base you are at a higher risk of attack? |

Re: Increasingly defenseless
Yeah, those guys on the military bases are keeping us real safe from terrorist attacks. And we'll be caught with our pants down when the Canadians or the Mexicans invade.

[/ QUOTE ] Um...as I remember being told constantly over the past 10 years, Clinton absolutely gutted the military and it was only through Bush's courage and Rummy's military genious that we were able to fight in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Seems to me closing bases on an Army that's already depleted could be catastrophic. Or were you guys [censored] lying before? |

Re: Increasingly defenseless
Only a fool would think we're vulnerable to conventional military attacks. We still have out two key defensive structures- the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. They're the key reason why no enemy soldier has set foot on American soil in more than a century. No significant enemy force has been on American soil in nearly two centuries.

Re: Increasingly defenseless
The U.S. is no more or less vulnerable today to conventional or terrorist attack due to the current commitments in Afghanistan or Iraq. The U.S however can no longer PROJECT power into any region, including Iraq and Afghanistan as the military is overstretched and everyone is well aware of that fact. If North Korea were unaware of the U.S's current situation, they would not be as publicly and aggressively pursuing their nuclear program.
It is the projection of power, through US land and sea forces that have been the most used and most effective peacekeeping tool over the last 5 decades. |

************************************************** ********* Troops going overseas? No if anything it has made the US a safer place. Iraw has turned into a magnet for Al Queda. If the USA is successful in turning Iraq into Democracy, this will be a huge blow to the Islamic-Fascist they know this and they are pouring lots of money and lots of personnel into Iraq. These resources are tied up in Iraq instead of being used in the USA. Base closings do NOT make the military weaker. The size of the military is dictated by Congress. Some military bases have higher overhead than others. Allowing the military to close military bases which are too expensive to operate frees up money which can be used elsewhere... The result is the military spends the tax $ more efficently and military gets stronger... |

Re: Increasingly defenseless
We ought to cut the military in half. Probably more. There is no need for the 100,000s of troops in Germany, Japan, and SK to name a few. There is also no need to keep a standing force of aircraft carrier battle groups or multi-million dollar F-22s. Who exactly are we fighting that requires this technology? The terrorist shooting Ak-47s in the air really don't care how new of a model our fighter jets are.
I would focus a lot less on democrat/republican on this issue. Or what specific politicians have done. Politicians really get in the way of governing. |

Re: Increasingly defenseless
I agree we need to remove troops from Germany. They deserve to be invaded for what they did in ww2. Japan has nothing anyone wants. And we need to just nuke NK and be done with it.
