How to "Read" people online?

Ive am a pretty successful player in NL with "fish" at the table where I can play straightforward and get paid off...however, I had a player on Prima that literally schooled me and was one of those that liked to rub it in...he was doing this to the whole table though so i didn't feel that bad...

called a bluff on him and got back to even. He then tells me "its about time you called a bet of mine...nh"

So, my question is..What kinds of things do you look for before you decide to make "plays" against people when you don't have the best hand like he was doing to this table?
