Default AA against a suspected Maniac

I had not been at this table too long but already had seen this Villain had some maniacal tendencies.

Party Poker 2/4 Hold'em (10 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. MP2 posts a blind of $2.
1 fold, UTG+1 calls, 1 fold, Hero raises, 2 folds, CO 3-bets, 2 folds, BB calls, UTG+1 calls, Hero caps, CO calls, BB calls, UTG+1 calls.

Flop: (17.50 SB) 2[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 6[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (4 players)
BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero bets, CO raises, BB folds, UTG+1 calls, Hero 3-bets, CO caps, UTG+1 calls, Hero calls.

Turn: (14.75 BB) K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (3 players)
UTG+1 checks, Hero checks, CO bets, UTG+1 calls, Hero calls.

River: (17.75 BB) 9[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (3 players)
UTG+1 checks, Hero checks, CO bets, UTG+1 folds, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 19.75 BB

After he 3 bet me pre flop and capped the flop, I was thinking I might be up against a set of Q's. The King on the turn further made me more timid. Was I right to call down or was a fold better?

Against a suspected maniac I lose probably 2-bets more than you did in this hand, assuming you did lose by the tone of your post.

If he was a maniac, I would have raised the turn and called down after he 3-bet.

folding at any point would be bad.

if hes not a total maniac then calling down is fine when the K comes on the turn. thats not a good turn card at all for your hand, but he's unnown and slightly maniacal, so folding is out of the question.

Chief,
I was very tempted to lose some more bets here but I was almost sure I was behind after the K came out. To my surprise this guy turned over a pair of 6's for the set.

I couldn't believe he 3-bet preflop with these, but then again he was a maniac.

Bet the turn to hopefully get UTG out (or make him pay a bit more for his [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] draw).

Then call down.

You played it fine. Folding for one bet at any point in this hand would be foolish, especially since you said you've seen CO do some "maniacal" things.
