Default 3-Bet 77 on the button?

Just sat down. Looks like he's trying to steal. Normally I would call, maybe fold to a solid EP raiser, but I thought I'd try and mix up my game. Is this a good bet or did I just get lucky? How to procede if the flop had brought, say, a 6 instead of a 7?

This is not a bad play, but as you stated it would make more sense with a read. Did you consider smooth calling the flop to raise the turn? If villain does not hold an ace this line may get you more $.

This is a fold or raise situation. And in situations like that I usually like to raise. Well done.

Ya, because if you shut out the blinds, you're better than a coinflip against overcards, against a player who could very well just be trying to steal anyways. Postflop is easy!

Agree that this was well played (not sure I would have the balls for the 3-bet, but will keep this one in mind for future reference).

But I also wonder at the next question - what if there is no 7 on the flop? Is that a check/fold, given the ace? What is the line without the 7?

Anybody have thoughts?

I think there are two schools of thought:

1) I want to see a cheap flop with 7s.

2) If I 3-bet and an ace comes, but no 7, if I continue to play aggressively, I may scare off moderate hands that might think I have AA. I've done this kind of thing a couple of times ... it works about 60 percent of the time.
