Default Staking Some one in a game

I have had times before when either I have had a poker friend put me in a game, stake me 50/50 he takes the loss. I've also had times when I have maxxed out my atm card only to be broke in a poker room on a Saturday night till I can get to the bank on Monday and have some one help me out.
The other night while playing I had a respected player, that plays in the 15/30 and 20/40 range ask me if he could borrow 1k, I play with this guy alot and I have become friends with him, but not outside of the poker room, I ended up coming up with a BS excuse why I could not spot him the 1k he offered for me to take 50% of him while he takes 50% of the hit if he loses and he said he would pay me back in the next couple weeks, but after that I kind of felt bad that I did not loan him the money....Any one have this experience before? I know what if feels like to hit rock bottom playing poker, I did it a year ago and hit really really hard fortuantly I had a friend get me back in the game, any one had experiences like this, and how did they handle them

It wasn't a nice offer for him to take 50% of his losses, you were just going 50/50. Sure if I was staking Dan Harrington he would get a better deal than me but if I was helping to get my buddy into the WSOP I'm not covering all losses and only getting 1/2 of the money.

Anyhow, obviously this is a personal situation and we can't know how fully you trust the guy, but if I had never met a person outside of a casino cardroom, didn't know where they lived and whatnot there's no way I'd lend them a grand on the spot. Anyone who plays at stakes that require $1000 to play should be able to pay you back the next morning as soon as the bank opens, or else he's probably a big loser overall and you might never see your cash. I think feeling guilty is better than feeling like a chump for giving someone a grand you might never see or might have to wait a while or work hard to get back...

I have a simple rule, and it goes for poker players or friends or family: If I can't afford to GIVE it to you, I'm not going to LEND it to you.

Need ten bucks for lunch? Sure. I can afford to GIVE you ten bucks. It won't ruin my day if I never see that money again.

A thousand? Not for my sister to pay the mortgage, much less a poker player for a buy-in.
