Wireless router for PC and Mac

I currently have a dial up internet connection for my PC and would like to tie into an existing cable connection. The Mac is now hooked up to the cable modem. If I purchase a wireless router am I going to have any compatibility issues between the Mac and PC. And is there any way to connect the Mac directly to the modem and use the wireless router just for the PC so I wouldn't have to buy two network cards.
