help me come up with my philosophy essay thesis

hey guys, im taking a first year philosophy class and have this huge essay due friday. I'm having trouble coming up with a thesis. The main area's I'm looking at are

1. The meaning of death, euthanasia
2. Existence of god
3. How should I respond to war on terrorism.

I really hate and suck at essay's so all help is greatley appreciated.

Never even try #2. It is pointless.

#3 doesn't seem that great for a philosophy class.

#1 doesn't do much for me. The meaning of death is that life functions have ceased. What happens after isn't very observable. Euthanasia/assisted suicide. Eh, maybe. That involves some things you can write about.


What kinds of stuff have you been reading for this class? I'd look to that for where to start. If these topics are the ones you have read about in class, well.....

If you're writing nr. 3 I think you have to apporach it from a side that shows the problems of moral/cultural relativism, while you show that you realize the American side of it is not necessarily corresponds to absolute true moral. The existence of God and the war on terrorism is quite difficult to write good assignments on, but if you're some kind of prodigy; go ahead. (I'm not even going to say anything about the existence of God, but I suppose you'd have to touch Descartes "proof" and Kants "proof" at least. (Kant realized it wasn't proof though.))

The authanasia is quite easy to write about from a philosophical point of view I think.

I would suggest avoiding #3 because it is possible that your professor holds strong views on the subject.

#2: A belief in the existence of God is/is not necessary to form a truly human ethical system.

#3: Are pre-emptive military strikes morally acceptable in the war on terrorism?

I disagree on #2. There are some fascinating arguments out there. You could write a great essay on how God and physics collide and collaborate on the existence of God.

There is a great book on the subject - God and the New Physics.
