Confrontation at a B&M
I was at the local card barn last night and had just gotten into the main game when this situation came up:
I was in the one seat, and the guy in the two seat was the only other player under 50 at the table. The beauty of this particular game is that its like this every night. Tons of old guys who totally suck, and occasionally a young guy or two who only kind of suck. From the moment I sat down the (young) guy on my left was having a total fit. Apperently he had take a few tough beats in the last hour or whatever, nothing abnormal for anyone thats played any amount of poker. But the guy would not shutup. He was constantly cursing his bad luck, which apperently hit the breaking point when his AQo got to see a flop of Kxx monotone, none of his suit. He went berserk at the guy who won the pot with 95s. "How the [censored] can you call my [censored] raise with [censored] 95, blah blah blah blah blah" I didn't really mind all the complaining but when he started berating the worst player at the table he crossed my line. So I turned to him and said something along the lines of, "Dude, they've got plenty of tissue over in the restroom. You look like you could use some." Needless to say, he did not take kindly to my comment and jumped up and attempted to get in my face as best he could givin the way the table is shaped. He said the usual stuff about how hes gonna knock me out and I don't understand what he's gone through cause I just got the the table, blah blah blah.... I certainly wasn't looking for a fight because theres no way I wanted to risk getting kicked out of this particular casino with all the free money sitting around the table. So I pretty much just smiled at him and put my headphones on and about that time he miraculasly went on a huge heater, winning about 4 kill pots in a row. This shut him up pretty good and he later apologized and it was all good. So, I guess my question is, was I out of line with my comment? How would you shut-up the guy who is scaring away your fishies? |

I don't know if you were "out of line," but your comment certainly sounds less than tactful. Whether you care or not is a different question.

Re: Confrontation at a B&M
when someone berates me for what they think is a bad play, i usually just keep myy mouth shut. but when they start berating the fish, i sometimes like to step in so that they redirect their rage towards me. i don't see anything too wrong with what you said.

Re: Confrontation at a B&M
you should have said, "if you got an issue, here's a tissue"

Re: Confrontation at a B&M
Just let it go. What's the upside? Psycho turd gets a personality change via your comments? What's the downside? You get thrown out of the game for instigating a fight? Psycho turd has friends with guns? What's the freakin point? You dont think every other person in the world knows the guy is over doing it? The fish will stay or go based on what you do, not what the Manson dude does. They'll stay because there's some hope that someone is ballanced. They're aleady certain he's not. Best tactic: ignore.
Best line if you're going to use one? "that guy who beat you is staring at your ass." |

Re: Confrontation at a B&M
I'm one of the old guys (51) who doesn't talk much at the table. Many times players don't think about your position, only that you played a hand they didn't expect. So when I play a 56s from the small blind and beat their AKo, it seems that guys who snap are usually young. I don't say anything, but when I bust them out later, I'm doing a sack dance in my head.
Last month at Foxwoods, I was at a 4/8 holdem table (couldn't get a seat at 10/20). A couple of newbies (fish) were bleeding money all over the place. The mood is friendly and everyone's having a good time. A slick-looking guy in his late 20's sits down. The first thing he does is tell the dealer to square-up the table, meaning he wants him to readjust everyone's chairs. The dealer moves one guy about 2 inches and everything's good. The next thing he does is complain to the dealer that one of the fish has a rack of chips off the table. The dealer makes the guy place all of his chips in front of him. What happens...everyone at the table tightens up, big time. After not playing a hand for the next hour, the fish leave. As they say, "Don't tap the aquarium" |

Re: Confrontation at a B&M
You didn't shut him up, you made things worse. Had he not won those next four pots, he would have started behaving even more badly.
Since he was sitting next to you, you could have turned to him and whispered something like, "Let him keep playing those 9-5s, you play so much better than he does, you'll get it back from him for sure." When a guy's on tilt, sooth his ego. At least you handled it well when he confronted you. |
