Default bonuses affecting rakeback

I know that bonuses have an adverse affect on a rakeback deal that you have, but in which way. Playing on the low limits (2/4) if you happen to be depositing money while a bonus is going on is it + ev to deposit without using the bonus?

Repeat after me: bonuses are good ...

Ok, lets look at a couple of examples. Most sites subtract any bonuses paid out from your MGR and then you get your rakeback % on the remaining amount. Let's assume you get 20% rakeback for these examples.

Example 1: You generated $50 MGR during the month.

If you had no bonus, you would get $50 * .20 = $10 rakeback. Now lets say, you cleared a $100 reload bonus that month. Your net MGR would be -$50 ($50 - $100) which is less than zero so you get no rakeback for the month but you still got the $100 in bonus.

$100 ($100 bonus + $0 rakeback) > $10 rakeback.

Example 2: You generated $150 MGR during the month.

If you had no bonus, you would get $150 * .20 = $30 rakeback. Now lets say, you cleared a $100 reload bonus that month. Your net MGR would be $50 ($150 - $100) which is greater than zero so you get $50 * .20 = $10 rakeback for the month in addition to the $100 in bonus.

$110 ($100 bonus + $10 rakeback ) > $30 rakeback.

You could consider bonuses to be sort of like a 100% rakeback plan.

I've been playing online for 5 months now and have been playing to work off bonuses probably 80-85% of the time. I started on 0.05/0.10, moved briefly to 0.10/0.20, played a lot of $.50/1 and am now playing $1/2. According to PokerTracker, I have paid around $1200 in rake (from General tab), have been credited by the sites with about $1400 in rake (from Games tab) and I have cleared over $2000 in bonuses (which have reduced my net MGR). Even if I had gotten 20% of $1400, that would only be about $280 (much less than the $2000 in bonuses I've earned.

It looks like this month will be the first time I actually get some rakeback in addition to the bonuses I've cleared already.
