Right time for a blocking bet?
The table im playing at is definately loose passive... villian has 44%/6% from 18 hands. I think my play up to the river is fine, but when i get into these types of situations (where a draw hits on the river) i tend to make a sort of blocking bet and see what happens. If they raise then i fold, and if they havent hit the draw they either fold or call. TBH looking back on the hand i think my river bet is wussy...
Take a look: PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.02 BB (9 handed) converter CO ($2.08) Button ($6.12) Hero ($4.92) BB ($3.35) UTG ($4.65) UTG+1 : Villian ($1.67) MP1 ($3.89) MP2 ($3.67) MP3 ($5.09) Preflop: Hero is SB with J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. UTG calls $0.02, UTG+1 : Villian calls $0.02, MP1 calls $0.02, <font color="#666666">2 folds</font>, CO calls $0.02, Button calls $0.02, Hero completes, BB checks. Flop: ($0.14) A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] <font color="#0000FF">(7 players)</font> <font color="#CC3333">Hero bets $0.14</font>, BB folds, UTG folds, Villian calls $0.14, MP1 folds, CO folds, Button folds. Turn: ($0.42) 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] <font color="#0000FF">(2 players)</font> <font color="#CC3333">Hero bets $0.4</font>, Villian calls $0.40. River: ($1.22) 5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] <font color="#0000FF">(2 players)</font> <font color="#CC3333">Hero bets $0.1</font>, Villian calls $0.10. Final Pot: $1.42 Results in white below: <font color="#FFFFFF"> Hero has Jd Ac (two pair, aces and eights). Villian has Qs Qd (two pair, queens and eights). Outcome: Hero wins $1.42. </font> Should i bet more on the river..say 1/2 the pot? TIA Obliky |

Re: Right time for a blocking bet?
The timing is right, but your bet is just so goddamn weak. Half pot seems about right. Or check and see what happens. Blocking bets have more value against tricky opponents, and from the results one doesn't think that villain is very tricky.

Re: Right time for a blocking bet?
You pretty much telegraphed your hand by the river. Luckily, your opponent was weak enough that it didn't matter (not raising queens preflop in a multiplayer pot... then calling on the flop with an Ace on the board. Basically How-Not-to-Play-NL 101 right there...). I agree with the previous poster. One-third to half the pot, and once again a blocking bet only works against a tricky player.
Scenario: A tricky player is bet a dime into on the river. He senses your weakness and half-pots or pots it. Now what? The turn and river were pretty much horrible for you. This where you could have actually blocked him, at least made him think, with a decent river bet. |
