Value Bet
A few hands came up yesterday in the 3/6 game on Party where I was showing Aces up or 4 to an Ace high flush against my opponents lesser two pair and I would bet on 7th street. After getting raised when the opponent filled up on his last card a couple of times it became aparent that value betting strategy in stud is much different then in hold'em since your not likely to extract an extra bet out of a hand that you can beat when your hand is so visable to them.
Are there any basic guidlines for betting your moderate hands on 7th street or should you just check/call your visable aces up and flushes against an oppoents 2 pair? |

Re: Value Bet
I am a little confused... but if you have aces up or a ace high flush and you feel you opponent only has two pair then you should bet the river everytime. You are going to make a lot more from betting there rather than checking. Your opponent isnt always going to fill up on the river...
If you feel your opponent is on a draw though...check/call on the river |

Re: Value Bet
You are correct -- when your entire hand is in sight (ie. you have trips on the board and did not fill) you should simply check. You can't make a value bet here, since a hand that can't beat trips won't call. You will probably want to call against most opponents in most circumstances. Whenever your hand is concealed, of course, you can value bet. For example, any two pair is likely to call your trips -- as long as one of them isn't in sight.

Re: Value Bet
sure there are, if your hand is better than your board then you should almost always bet. To put it another way, if all you have is what you are representing then bet everytime!!! This is the Ciaffone rule.

Re: Value Bet
If you are showing two pair and that's all you have, bet sixth if appropriate, but don't bet seventh. Although people have been known to call when they can't beat the board, it's pretty rare, and for all intents and purposes, your bet can only lose. Be prepared to call if your opponent bets, though.
If you're showing four to a flush and have a flush, by all means bet unless you have reason to believe that you're beaten. People will pay off with two pair and trips all the time, and they are usually correct to do so. |
