Default Question For Cali Players?

I'm flying in to LAX the second week of February for a conference in Woodland Hills. I would like to get out and play a couple times while I'm there but I will not have a car. From the research that I have done, the closest poker room looks to be either Commerce, Bicycle or Hollywood. Is this correct? Are there any closer? I usually play 10-20 up to 20-40, which should I choose? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Considering the limit you're playing. Go to Commerce so can either play their 9-18 or 20-40 and there will be plenty of games at all times.

That's not that close to Woodland Hills though, so if you're cabbing it don't go during rush hour (anytime between 4:30pm-7pm, it depends though)

Well, Hollywood Park is literally 6-7 blocks from LAX. From Woodland Hills, Hollywood Park and Commerce are about the same distance from eachother travel-time wise, and Commerce is going to have a bigger selection in the range you play.

I'd say play at Hollywood Park when you arrive since you'll be so close to it, but when leaving from Woodland Hills, head to Commerce.

And I'll second what the other poster said. Traveling to Commerce anytime before 7:30PM is going to be a costly cab-ride.

The cab ride to and from Woodland Hills will be so expensive that you are better off renting a car. At least check that out as an option.

As far as games go - do not play 10-20 in SoCal, for some reason that game stinks where it is spread (HP has it sometimes, and the Bike). 9-18 at Commerce is super loose, perhaps the best game in your range. HP has 15-30, which is pretty passive, and Commerce has 15-30 most of the time (*not* passive, at least when I've played it). Never seen 15-30 at the Bike but only been there once since they remodeled the top section. All of them of course have 20-40.

Hollywood park is much closer to Woodland Hills then Commerce is. They are both far too far for a cab ride. HP is pretty dreary and has a low-life feel to it. Commerce is pretty nice. They are both in bad parts of town.

If you have time, I'd go to both.

You must work in the Insurance industry? Health, Property, or Casualty?

I don't think you can generalize the way you have. The games vary at all the locations you mention, sometimes passive, but more commonly, loose, and agressive.

And as has been indicated, Commerce Casino is the mother of all poker halls.

Thank you all for the info. How long of a cab ride am I looking at on a weekend mid-day? Also it sounds like the consensus is that the Commerce is the way to go, but are there any other poker rooms that are closer than the ones being mentioned? Again thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, those are your only choices. The Bike and Hustler are just as far.

I'd say if you took a cab at 8pm from Woodland Hills to Commerce, best case scenario would be 25-30 minutes and worst case would be 45-60 minutes.

Dude, look.....

There are no casinos located in City of Los Angeles. Since Woodland Hills is part of City of Los Angeles, and is at the far northwest end of it, and City of Los Angeles stretches out a damm long way(30 miles from Woodland Hills to Commerce), you realistically have no choice but to drive or find a ride with someone. All other card rooms are just about as far(HP is 18 miles from my place in East SF Valley, but the 405 traffic is horrendous on weeknights until about 11pm).

Car rentals can be had for compacts via Enterprise for about $25-30 a day. Use it if you want to play cards.

Cab will be disastrously expensive. 25-30 minutes to Commerce from Woodland Hills is in no traffic going 80 MPH the whole way. I live about 8 miles closer to Commerce than you do and it takes me 35-40 minutes on a Friday night at 9pm going down the 5FWY.

No cardrooms closer than Commerce or Bike on a midweek, midday. HP is closer milleagewise, but the 405 is godawful. Anywhere you go mid week midday is going to be 45 minutes minimum.

I once thought you could not generalize either. Play at commerce and you will see that a lot of the limits have unique and consistent play styles. This is due in part to a distinct group of players who stick at each limit and seem to acclimate to their peers play. Specifically, 9/18 is awesomely loose just about all the time.
