Default Playing like a maniac to blow off steam?

Sometimes after a rough session or a big downswing I like to sit down at the lower limits ($0.5/$1 on Party) and play somewhat like a maniac, usually just by loosening my preflop standards by A LOT and playing way more aggressive. I find that this helps me from getting on tilt and helps me improve my postflop play as well. Does anyone else do something like this?

i usually play one of the next hands at the table I wouldn't normally play. i tilt for just 1 hand, and sometimes I take a big pot because of it other times I lose a bit of money. I find this helpful in blowing off the steam

Dropping way down in limit once in awhile is a great idea.

You then have the freedom to try different things that you would be afraid to try at your normal limit.

You can sometimes make great improvements to your game that way.

I like going to NL 25 and make some really lame moves, hopefully winning a big pot from JJ with Q3os and get berated.

Sadly, all sessions end up the same way. I get AA and get headsup with an evil villain, putting his OESD all-in on the turn and then lose my stack.

As long as this is done at a limit that is MUCH lower than your normal limit, this is a fantastic way to blow off steam, at least for me. I just love going to a small limit game and playing like a maniac. I usually do it until I put a beat on someone else as bad as the last beat that I took that had me steaming! Very therapeutic. Try going to the smallest limit game and just raising everything to the river no matter what you have. Buy into the 1c-2c game for like $900 and keep pressing "raise" till you are off tilt. I don't play online anymore but at small stakes home games I will sure jack it up with crap all day long, and perhaps at the 2+2 Super-Magoo games that occasionally occur at the 1-3 at excalibur!

Daniel Negreanu, one of the world's best players, has written more than one column about doing exactly what you described. Sorry, but I don't remember the title of his columns, but you can read them at cardplayer.com. I believe one of them was about a year ago.

You might also go to his website which (I believe) is fullcontactpoker.com.

Regards,

Al
