Standard bad beat.

I don't really understand your question though. Are you asking how we'd play the AT? Don't waste your time trying to justify your opponents bad plays just because they ended up beating you.

I guess in his shoes I would have bet the pot, ~250, you would raise all in, and with the outs I had I'd be commeted and call. Same result.
