Default Poker chips/table top advice?

Hi!

My bf is a poker player, and I am looking to buy him a set of poker chips and a table top for xmas. (I don't mind that he plays... as long as he keeps spending his winnings on me! He's teaching me to play too... last week a friend of his had a tournament with 8 players and I finished 2nd and he finished 3rd... it will be a long time before he lives that down I think!)

I have done some searching on these boards... but now I think I'm ready to ask some questions from you guys who are "experts" before I buy.

Right now, I think I am leaning towards buying him this combo set:

http://www.pokerchipmart.com/SA600SS135FHT2.html

But I have read on here that a lot of people really like the 10 g faux clay chips from 5stardeal, and they are a lot cheaper...

I have also seen a table top on ebay that was basically felt that had some kind of fastener thingy to put it on top of a table so that it would pretty much fit any size. Here's the link

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...6&tc=photo

(I hope those links worked... this is my first time posting here... I'm sorry if they didn't!)

So I guess here are my questions:

1.) It the set that I linked a good set or is it a rip off and they are lousy chips and table that are way overpriced.

2.) Should I get the 10 g faux clays instead (they are kinda plain), or should I get 11.5 or 13.5 gram chips. Is there a big difference in the quality of those chips at any particular website? He likes to play poker, but it's not like he is looking for the fanciest chips in the world. I just want to get him something nice that he would like.

3.) Which a better tabletop, the foldout one or the one that has the fastener thingy from ebay?

Thank you guys so much for your help! I've learned a lot about playing poker from reading this website the last few weeks. (I will tell my bf about it, but not until after xmas so he doesn't see this post )

The slip on cover from ebay looks pretty cool actually. I play on a table shaped like that. Looks good for the price.

hello-

i bought the 1000 Poker Chips Texas Hold em Set from 5stardeal.com which has turned out to be great. i think i prefer these cheap light chips to the heavier ones anyway, and for $100 i got 1000 chips (enough for forever, and colors/numbers are choosable) and racks to hold them, which are pretty cool too. also key with this deal is that shipping is free (or at least was) with a $100 order. the downside to this is that a chipcase is not incuded.

in addition, if you want a table top, check out www.micro-limit.com. assuming you are not averse to playing a little online poker, you can get the table top for free. the micro-limit.com promotion is great because there are very few obligations in terms of depositing (only $20 is needed) and hands played (only one is needed). the downside to this is that it is uncertain when you might receive the table (if you need it by xmas). however, you could order it from 5stardeal straightaway -- a friend of mine has this table top which is very handy and useful (he actually bought it for $50 at bed bath and beyond -- not sure what 5star is charging for it.) i'd choose a full table top over that drawstring cover if i had to choose.

hope this helps

I bought the same table cloth coverter from pokercats (the one you pointed to on ebay) and it is very nice. It is the same cloth that they use for their tables. If you already have a table that will work with one, this is the way you should go. The folding poker tables usually have a cheaper feeling felt that pills up.

Those round and octagon tables look cool. I'm thinking about getting one now!

The fire table design is tiiiiight. I'll have to see if I can find a way to steal the design when I get started on building my table. Don't care too much for the rail on this one. But the flames....the flames!

Most 11.5g chips are plastic with a metal insert, and feel terrible. The 10g faux dice, and the 13.5g set you linked (I own this set) feel much nicer. They are both good sets for their relatively low cost.

Just so you know, the exact same set is available for $139.95 at http://www.pokernstuff.com/index.asp...amp;ProdID=265
