moving up limit
i was waiting for a 5-10 seat last night and ended up watching what might have been the juciest 20-40 ever. it played like a loose passive 5-10 game. 5-8 callers pre-flop and 2-4 palyers on every river, almost nobody raised. i was seriously considering sitting down, despite a short bankroll for that limit, any thought on what you would do?

Re: moving up limit
Stay away from it. If you don't have the bankroll, don't play. Period. Loose Passive games often mean long periods of losses with a few large wins. If you don't get one of those large wins early, you'll be staring at a highly diminished bankroll (quite possibly 2/3 of your bankroll lost or more). If you have 300BB bankroll for 5/10, that means you have $3000, or 75BB for a 20/40 game. You can easily go 50BB without a win in a loose/passive game (I've done it). Do you really want to risk being left with only 25BB, or $1000 (1/3 your bankroll)?

Re: moving up limit
On the other hand, if you aren't a pro and your bankroll is renewable, then there's no reason not to sit in a softer game at a higher limit as long as you can buy in for enough. Just make sure you can trust your observation skills.

Re: moving up limit
The 300bb bankroll figure is for professionals who have no other income. Its meaningless for folks supplementing their income.

Re: moving up limit
I don't have a problem doing it very occasionly.
I normally do it after running well at my usual limit, and have some surplus cash. I just set a loss limit (which I never normally do) - e.g. I don't really care if I lose this xxx dollars. I quit the game when I have lost that much money or am bored. Last time I did this I got dealt AA on my second hand! |
