Default Call or fold with 22 in CO?

Poker Room 1/2
I'm in CO with 22

UTG Raise
UTG1 folds
UTG2 calls
MP1 calls
MP2 re-raise
Mp3 folds
Hero ???

I figured that even if I did hit my set, some of the other players probably held pocket pairs, hence risking running into a higher set, so I folded. Was that correct?

If you fold, it's not because you should be worried of set over set.

Because it happens so rarely?
So my fold was incorrect?

Yes because it happens so rarely. When I saw that it was 3-bets to you with 22, I first thought immediately fold because you may not make the implied odds post-flop. However when I saw that it was possibly 5 to the flop, I re-thought that given that there will be enough betting post-flop to make up for it. I'm torn...

You want to get in as cheap as possible with 22. Easy fold.

True but more importantly, you want to make lower pocket pairs profitable by making sure you get your implied pot odds. If it was only 2-bets to you in the CO, I think it's an easy call.

MtDewVirus's comment is based on the same point. By calling 3 bets PF, you cut your implied odds based on future bets by a factor of 3 compared to limping.

I just felt the get in cheap with 22 was too much a blanket statement. There are times when cold-calling is correct and calling just one-bet is not correct.
