tourney stats
What are good stats for a tourney player. I searched but did not come up with anything. I made my first final table the other night in a 1509 person tourney, and have been doing a lot better lately, I always seem to be around the final 200, it seems like once you get there anything can happen.
I got 8th in the one where I made the final table and I was chip leader with 300 people, 39th with 40, and then 10th at final table. So 8th wasnt bad I guess. |

Re: tourney stats
I look at net rate of return: (Cash outs - cost of entries) / cost of entries. Cashouts/Cost of entries is equivalent to this (mine is just offset by -1).
There was a post, started I think by davidross not too long ago talking about this. Some other things that may be worth looking at: Hourly rate (Cash - Cost)/Hours played Final Table Percentage Final Three Percentage |

Re: tourney stats
What do you want to do with the information you glean from the stats? The answer to that question will tell you what information you should gather.
Do you want to improve your game? Do you want to determine the best type of tournament for you to enter? Do you want to compare your ability with others? Do you want to see if there is a long term profit? Once you decide what you want to do: 1) determine what metrics to capture 2) review your past tournament results for the metrics 3) record metrics on new tourneys 4) analyze the results I know that doesn't give you a specific answer to your question, however I'm sure we could come up with some metrics and some ways of analyzing them if the question was more specific. Nice subject! -scarr |

Re: tourney stats
I have all my stuff into Pokertracker so I do have all my stats and can look at everything. I was thinking more, how often should a good tourney player be making a final table in a 1500 person tourney say on Party? How often should they be in the money. (I know that might not really matter if you get a few firsts and then a bunch of outs, but still that is sort of what I am looking for.

Re: tourney stats
I heard the rule of thumb is that expert players should make the money twice as often as expected. Thus, for a tourney where 5% cash, an expert should money 10% of the time. Similar results for tournaments where over half cash by default are not guaranteed.
