After my girfriend has spent hours seeing me in front of the computer playing poker, she has decided she wants to learn. What is the best book for her?
Basically I want to be able to go to AC or Foxwoods for the night and be able to sit at a 2/4 table and just have a good time while being able to turn a slight profit. Bear in mind, she doesnt even know what a flush is, so a complete walkthrough of hand rankings, and some basic strategy. She was a math major in school so the counting outs and stuff like that she could handle. Basically need something real beginner like what is flop/turn/river and how to check raise and a decent starting hand table and postflop play guide. I own SSHE, HEPFAP but those clearly will not help her in the slightest. |

WLLH is a good book for a beginner to learn. I'm going to have my wife read it pretty soon (that and Theory of Poker if its not too overwhelming). I think it can give your girlfriend a decent foundation to work off. There may be better books for a rank beginner though.

There are pleanty of sites online with that sort of real beginner info.
http://www.thehendonmob.com/guide/ decent guide http://www.vcpoker.com/pokerschool/ (has an interactive section as well) That should get her the basic rules maybe play for play money on a site and giver her some coaching, there is the obvious Lee Jones book for starting hands etc. I would maybe use the sshe hand tables but tighten up a bit till she gets confident. |

I read WLLH and it is a fantastic book for beginners, although for someone that has some poker experience, it will probably be a waste of time.

2+2 people generally hate it, but Hold'Em Excellence by Lou Krieger really starts you out from square one. It doesn't take you far at all, but I thought it gave me a great understanding and stopped me from losing money.

I also suggest Fundamentals of Poker by Mason and Lynne Loomis. It's cheap, short (seventy-odd pages), and covers the basics.
