88, completely routine?
Party 15/30, seems like a typical loose/aggressive table. UTG and MP limp, I complete in the SB with 8 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 8 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. BB checks. 4 to the Flop, 2bb.
Flop: 7 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 6 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 4 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] I lead, BB raises, limpers fold, I 3-bet, BB calls. 2 to the Turn, 5bb. Turn: Q [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] I bet, BB calls. 2 to the River, 7bb. River: 5 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] I bet, BB raises, I call. -Brian |

Re: 88, completely routine?
i'm interested to hear why you think betting out and calling a raise is preferred to checking and calling here

Re: 88, completely routine?
I usually bet, but there are oppenents who I would fold to when raised. Checking and calling seems reasonable agaist somone who has a tendancy to bluff the river to much.

Re: 88, completely routine?
worth instant messaged this one to me. it's completely standard, and i'm absolutely boggled that he claims paluka's preference is:
1 - check/call 2 - bet and fold to a raise 3 - bet and call a raise you bet because many worse hands (mostly pairs) would check through. you call a raise because there are 10 bets in the pot and you only need him to be bluffing or raising a worse hand like 2 pair or a straight less than 10% of the time to make the call profitable. anything less would be uncivilized. the "bluff catcher" check/callers seem to be ignoring the fact that he raised the flop and continued calling. it's very likely he has some kind of hand, and some kind of hand likes to check down scary rivers when they can beat high cards. |

Re: 88, completely routine?
Yeah, like I told Justin, I respect his and Chris' theories the most of my friends, so my curiosity was really piqued when they gave two distinctly different answers...I'm not sure where I fall now. My gut reaction is check/call, but Justin makes a pretty convincing argument.
*edit* I should say that I thought when the story was relayed to me first that it was folded to the sb (Brian), but I dont think it changes much re: the question I really care about which is the play on the end since UTG and MP folded straight away. |

I bet, BB raises, I call. BB shows K [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 6 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] and I'm good. Some notes were made. -Brian |

Re: 88, completely routine?
Many hands that will pay off a river bet (pair, two pair, straight) will usually check through.
Check-calling to induce a bluff only applies if you have good reason to believe your opponent has nothing (i.e. missed draw). That's simply not the case here. |
