Poker gods: if you're listening, it's me Jack. Why does everybody suck out except me? Calling 2 bets cold with only 2 outs in the entire deck. Putting in 3 bets pre-flop with 79o.

Why is it that you smile and reward this play with luck? Watching as they gleefully drag $80 pots after catching their gutshot card on the river...completely oblivious to their mathematical incompetence.

Why is it them you smile upon instead of me? I, a devoted student of your game, tirelessly reading through works penned by great scholars of your game, properly calculating pot odds, correctly laying down aces when the situation dictates, playing only premium hands, slaving at the altar of HPFAP...should it not be I upon whose posterior Lady Luck smiles? Why is it that you taunt me by dealing my set card on the turn after I folded my pocket eights on the flop? By dealing flops of 4,7,8 after I folded 56 in the small blind? By dangling pocket aces in front of me as I sit in the big blind, only to have it cruelly folded around? Why is it that you tease me so? Was it that fish that I berated in my younger days? That dealer who I forgot to toke at the Taj? The manner in which I sully your game by passing the time in between hands by perusing internet pornography? Please, poker gods: I am a good man, who plays your game correctly. Won't you please shed light on the error of my ways so that I may correct them and once again bask in the warm light of your fortune.

Boat has hit the nail right on the head: if you are a good player, selective in the hands that you play, good hand reader that knows when you are way behind, etc, you will rarely be in a situation where you are way behind on the river and have to hit a miracle to win it.

If you don't chase with mediocre holdings, you don't give bad beats.
