Default Got the iPod, what the crap is up with iTunes?

So I picked up the iPod on Friday, and I'm having a hell of a time with iTunes.

Here's the situation. I had about 2,500 songs organized into folders by genre and subfolders by either artist or album.

I dragged them all into iTunes and they're just random in there.

So I tried creating "playlists" with the same names as my folders and subfolder, but it looks like I have to re-drag and drop all the files in them. Plus, it doesn't alert me if I make a dupe... which I could easily do with so many files to sort (I won't be able to do all of 'em at once).

Anyone use iTunes and have some tips on how to make this easier?

Thanks...

Only import 1 playlist at a time to the library, then make your playlist.

Delete all the songs in itunes from the directory, NOT the hard drive. Download Media Monkey from www.download.com, Input all the songs into media monkey and sort them by file path which will sort your folders. Highlight all the ones in each folder, right click, select properties and fill out any ID3 tages you want to be common, in this case, genre. Then reload everything into Itunes and you will see they are already broken down by the genre you labeled in media monkey. Easiest way I know.

You can change tags in iTunes also. Just right-click --> Get Info

That's freaking genius. I am a n00b.

I assume the playlists will transfer automatically to the pod, no?

I "think" so but I don't know for sure. I always imported all the files I wanted to the library, then made the playlist on my iPod and then dragged all the music files into that playlist.

I don't know if you're on a PC or not (I'm on a Mac), but in my version of iTunes in the "edit" menu there's a "show duplicate songs" option. Click it and it shows all songs that have the same title, and then you can delete the ones that are unnecessary.

(Note that it only goes by the title, so if you have two versions of the same song -- say a studio and a live version -- and they are titled the same, it will list those as duplicates.)

How do you "make" a playlist on your iPod?

Also, that idea doesn't work. Turns out it intersperses the files when you drag and drop so I can't tell which is which.

with whatever program you were using to listen to them before, correct the id3 tags to have the right info. then itunes will sort by that.
