Default Top Pair Weak Kicker

MP1 is loose preflop. No other reads.

Wasn't sure what to do on the flop with the weak kicker considering the SB bet into a 5 man field, but figured it was raise or fold. I raised to protect my hand.

Pacific Poker 1.00/2.00 Hold'em (10 handed)

Preflop: Hero is in BB with A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] and 8 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img].

3 Folds, MP1 calls, 2 folds, CO calls, Button calls, SB completes, Hero Checks.

Flop: (5 SB) 4 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 9 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (5 players)

Turn: (5.5 BB) 6 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (3 players)

SB is confusing, I guess he has another hand like yours where he doesn't want to give spades a free card. I play it the same way though.

I fold the flop - the pot just isn't big enough with no backdoor draws and 3 players to act behind you. FWIW I like the turn & river because you're WA/WB SB and since MP1 can have any 2 cards I don't mind his overcall.

I think that you played it fine.

I would not be surprised if SB showed down a 9,4.

SB propably has an ace with a weaker kicker that yours. You can't fold this hand anywhere. Well played.

We don't really need backdoor draws when we probably have the best hand.

It is close, but I'm not sure we have the best hand all that often.

I think our villain made aces up on the turn, in which case we have 6 outs (board pairing the 9, or pairing our kicker, 6). This is like 7:1, and if we consider the possibility that we are ahead, then I think it's worth a turn call. The river UI is a touch decision. We have to beat two opponents. This is borderline, but I'd probably make the call, the fish that I am.

An intersting question comes of this. Not to derail but if SB is laggy do you raise that river to try and push out MP1 and cut the overcall.
