Default I\'ve IDd my tilt triggers, but I want to beat tilt altogether. Help?

Al and fellow Tilt experts: I have identified my tilt triggers and have gotten very good at leaving the casino when they happen (I prefer live play). My two main triggers are:

1) I fold for hours on end, then catch a good hand but have to lay it down to an obviously better hand

2) I fold for hours on end, then catch a strong hand only to lose to a weak player with crap cards.

Tonight trigger #2 happened when I folded about 6 million hands in a row, finally flopped a set of 8s, but lost to a calling station who caught a miracle straight with 6 3 offsuit. My response to the calling station was "You lucky m*&^% fu&&^^king * idiot as^%%$ b$#$#!!!" Since I have a personal policy of leaving when I start to berate other players, out the door I went.

The problem was, this game was VERY juicy, alternating between loose-passive and loose-aggressive. Had I been able to maintain my composure, I may very well have had a profitable night. I mulled over the possibility of returning to the game but ultimately decided that I was on tilt and needed to go home.

I want to be able to beat this. The round-trip to journey to Atlantic City is a three hour ordeal. I don't like having to leave profitable games just because some nimrod gets lucky, or just because a decent hand doesn't pan out for me.

Help?

Why are you folding 6 million hands in a row at table with calling stations playing 63o?

All of your "tilt triggers" begin with "I fold for hours on end..." are you maybe, just maybe, playing too tight for the table conditions? Perhaps you're tilting not because of other people's play but because you subconsciously realise you are playing way too tight?

You didn't mention the limits you play, but I can't imagine a live, low to mid limit game where it's correct to fold "6 million hands" unless you're playing in a rock graden. In which case, why the hell are you playing in a rock garden? No wonder you're tilting...

Excellent point. By "folding hands for hours on end" he is really playing too tight. His subconscious mind knows this and is telling about it by putting him on tilt. Once he loosens up,he won't tilt as much. In the loose passive games that he mentions that he plays, playing hands as bad as Axs and 56 suited in late position in un-raised pots can be profitable.

He didn't say much about what level of player he is but it looks to me that he is ready to loosen up his play somewhat because he has moved up a level in skill to where he can loosen up a bit. His subconscious mind knows this and is putting him on tilt to tell him this.

Also, the commute time to AC may be affecting him.

Folding 6 million hands in a row was a bit of a gross exaggeration. I normally play 4-8 and 5-10 games that are typically loose passive. I'm actually referring to the occasional horrid runs where I can't even get a marginal hand like Axs or 76s in late position, and where most of my pocket cards consist of offsuit crap with rarely 1 card over an 8.

Fortunately, these runs only happen to me once every 5 or 6 sessions, and I can detect when tilt is likely to happen. Still, I'd like to avoid it. Loosening up during these runs is really not an option, in all honesty.

Other ideas?

I feel for you. As a B&Mer myself, I know how what it
is like to go for up to a couple of hours with no cards.

It's not the net, folks. Loose games with no dealing
machine can be as slow as 20 hands/hr. These same games
are beatable at 1.5BB/Hr, so they are worth being in.
The other players just really suck, for the most part.

So in 40-50 hands, you sometimes get nothing that is
playable, even for those games. The suckout rate is
fairly high since there are more loose callers to the
end.

I don't always manage, but try laughing out loud any
time you want to vent. The release is almost the same
and it is a much more positive thing for both you and
the table.

Best of luck.

I play only in B&M's too, so I know what the conditions can be like. Also; there are factors in live play that you don't have at a computer, like sometimes the room is so crowded that it's not practical to change tables, and in your case you have to drive for so many hours. STILL - you know that it's the nature of poker to do this to you every so often, when I read your post it seemed like you were wound way too tight to go off on a player like that. It happens to all of us. Taking a VERY deep breath and deciding right there and then if you can get yourself back in the mood to play poker, maybe get up for a few minutes, or change tables if possible - these could all be alternatives to leaving. I recently lost a huge pot in a 4/8 game to a guy who called my raises and called all the way to the end where he got runner/runner cards to make a straight when he held 5, 2 offsuit. I had pocket queens. Oh well...All I said to the people sitting near me who were commiserating with me was "It's his right to hold those cards if he wants, but I wouldn't be proud of that if I were him." I couldn't quite bring myself to say "Nice hand" to him.
Good luck.

I found myself nodding and almost laughing out loud when I read what your "tilt triggers" are. Mine are the same, and I'm also a B&M player for the most part.
I was in AC on new year's eve and playing the 6-12 game at the Trop. One guy at the table, a total calling station, was making incredible catches on the river, e.g., making a flush with 72s that he called all the way with. After a few hours of this I had enough and switched over to the 10-20 game and proceeded to run all over the table for two hours.
The next time this happens to you, and it will, just remember that you will eventually get the money if you continue to play the way you should be playing. If not at that table then at another one, if not that night then the next night, or the one after that.
Keep the faith.
