NTVDM error...

sorry if this is the wrong forum, but if it is please direct me to the correct one.

At random times, a black screen pops up on my screen with a blinking cursor. I checked the file path and its located in the windows folder under the name NTVDM.exe but cant be deleted. Whenever this occurs it causes my complete to slow down severely. Ive tried system restore, but it didnt solve the problem. Besides reformatting or reinstalling windows, is there anything i can do about this?
