grunch: you'll improve to a straight something like 30-35% of the time, right? With 5 players in, you need 2 others to call to have an equity edge. A bet may be profitable here if the table is extremely loose, but I'd just check and see what the action is, planning to call a bet re-evaluate on the turn.

A read on UTG1 or UTG2 would help cause if they like to bet I like a check. Then if 2 call I check/raise the now trapped feild. But given a basic loose passive table I think I bet.

bet...You've got a good draw and can get some bets now from the dead money. If you wait until the turn any loosing hand is probably just gonna fold.

Get some money in early

Thanks for the thoughts. Hero did bet flop and here is how it played out. When I said table was passive I was not kidding. Results in white.

PokerStars 0.10/0.20 Hold'em (10 handed) internettexasholdem.com

Preflop: Hero is BB with T[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].
1 fold, UTG+1 calls, UTG+2 calls, 1 fold, MP2 calls, 3 folds, SB completes, Hero checks.

Flop: (5 SB) 4[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (5 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, UTG+1 calls, UTG+2 calls, MP2 calls, SB calls.

Turn: (5 BB) Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (5 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, UTG+1 folds, UTG+2 calls, MP2 folds, SB calls.

River: (8 BB) Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (3 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, UTG+2 raises, SB folds, Hero 3-bets, UTG+2 caps, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 16 BB

Results in white below:
Hero has Tc 9d (straight, queen high).
UTG+2 has 8c Qs (full house, queens full of eights).
Outcome: UTG+2 wins 16 BB.

This is bad math. Sometimes you will hit a pair and win too. Betting the flop will occasionally save the pot for you those times you hit a pair and knock out someone who would have made a higher pair.
