Default The bookshelf - New Books

Purchased three books over the weekend. Title and one book blurb follow:

Anit-intellectualism in American Life, by Richard Hofstadter (this book won the 1964 Pulitzer Prize in Non-Fiction).

"As Mr Hofstadter unfolds the facinating story, it is no crude battle of eggheads and fatheads. It is a rich, complex, shifting picture of the life of the mind in a society dominated by the ideal of practical success'. - Robert Peel in the Christian Science Monitor

American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson, by Joseph J. Ellis. (Andy mentioned some books on Jefferson recently and I think this may have been one of them but I am uncertain.)

'This elegant book on Jefferson sets a standard - history at its best.' - Chicago Tribune Editor's Choice.

The Chomsky Reader, Edited by James Peck.

'The Chomsky Reader brings together for the first time the political thought of America's leading dissent intellectual - "arguably the most important intellectual alive"' ( New York Times ).

I started Hofstadter's book already and like his writing style.

I'll post a review and my thoughts on each book as I finish.
