Default Exposed card question

In a tournament style game, what is the proper action to take if a player flips over their cards before the final betting takes place, or before all the community cards are dealt?

It can depend on the rules of the tournament/casino.

Some places it is ok to expose your hand as long as the pot is heads up but if the pot is multi way your hand is declared dead.

Usually though in tournament play exposing your holecards while in a hand makes your hand dead and often a warning will be issued followed by a time penalty if it happens again.
