3-4 BB per 100 hands long term (meaning at least 50k hands) for limit.
Per 100 hands is a better measurement because people may play more tables than others, more hours, etc.

Seriously though, it is better to quantify as BB / N hands. Most use N = 100. Read the other posts, this has been discussed to death all over. 2BB/100 hands is solid, in my opinion. -RMJ

I think it depends a lot on the limits you are playing. If you are playing 15-30 or 20-40, 2.5 - 3 BB/100 would be good enough in the long run, but if you are playing micro limits like .50-100 than you will probably want to make at least 5-10BB/100.

agreed. at .50/1.00 a solid should have a higher BB/100 rate b/c they are (or should be at least) surrounded by lesser players, whereas at the higher limits you will have a proportionately higher number of opponents equal to you in skill.

I think the other posters may be setting the bar a little too high for you to start out with.
Very few people win at poker in the long run. If your BB/100 is > 0 over 50K+ hands then you are probably a good player. Certainly well above average. If you want to be a professional and support yourself playing poker, then the numbers given above would apply. 2 BB/100 is a very solid win rate for a recreational player IMO.

That's great for limit , but what is good for NL?
If there is a thread on this already, a link would be awesome, but most of the numbers I have seen have been for limit play. Can you even gauge NL players the same? IE. Last night I played: 1/2NL 100 Buy-in left with ~160 for ~5 hrs play live (30 BB for the night... roughly 6BB/hr)... and I know I didn't play anything near 1500 hands (which would give me 2BB/100 hands), but I didn't count hands either. I also know that is one night not 50k hands. But how do you gauge that?

10 PTBB/100 (as in Poker Tracker BB/100) is a bit on the high side but achievable for a select few as a longterm BB/100 (sorta like 4BB/100 for limit).
For the rest of us, 5-8 PTBB/100 longterm is a more attainable NL winrate By longterm I mean at least 50k hands, I've had some pretty wild swings within 15k hands in both directions.
