Default Oh brother! (very low content)

Earlier today, my mother told me that my little brother won $20,000 playing video poker at an Indian casino.

Not that it matters here, but my brother knows next to nothing about poker and thinks all gambling is pure luck. Hmm, maybe he’s right.

It was a $5 dollar machine. He had been playing one and two coins, got ahead a couple hundred bucks and so started playing 5 coins ($25 a hand) at a time. On the second $25 hand, he hit a royal flush in diamonds.

It took about 45 minutes for them to pay him off after checking out the machine and then offered him cash or a check. He opted for the check and told my Mom that he had to stop a few times on the way home to make sure it really happened. Wow.

Sweet! Even though I hate to admit it. I played video poker last year at this place in RI. My buddies and I would get TRASHED(except for this one kid who drove us everywhere...he doesnt drink for some strange reason) and go there and drop a couple of bucks on video poker or the races. During the week there was a ton of action but on the weekends when everyone was partying that was the only place I could lose my money! lol...this was last fall before I discovered the internet. Now I lose even more money when I am wasted. Thursday night I got wasted and somehow couldnt cash in any of the mutli table tournaments I played! weird...bye bye 135 bucks. sorry...random rambling...

Hey, drinking, video poker and “horse” race betting sounds like a good time to me!

I’m a little worried about little bro though. It’s great that he won the money but I’m afraid he’ll give it back and more because I think he’s caught the gambling bug and is totally unarmed for it. I’ve talked to him a bit about poker and wonder if I’ve contributed to this.

Personally, I don’t have a “real” gambling bone in my body, which may partially explain why I suck so much. But little bro lost a bunch of money playing slots and BJ last year and was suppose to have learned his lesson.

Now he’s playing a $5 video poker machine? Not good.

I’m not worried about you though. You can always make it back when you sober up, lol.

it depends on his income level and responsibilities; played correctly, a full pay JOB machine pays out well over 99%- so betting 25$/ hand, 200+ hands an hour, means VP costs an avarage of around 30$/hr or so... not bad for entertainment, but terrible if he has a problem... (intrestingly, there are deuces wild machines that carry a PLAYER advantage- like 00.03%, but the player does have an edge... i go nuts on those when i find them)

IMO, all gamblers either A: learn to play within their means and accept that they will lose at a predictable long term rate, or B: have a gmbling problem. (i include poker in this, with the exception of the 5% or less that are long term winners)

maybe time for 1-800-gambler?

personally i don't even talk about my poker with my little bros (one is 20, the other 17) it's not that i don't think they could handle gambling (but then again, i don't even know how well I hndle it- i've only been a serious gambler for a year or so), it's that i recognize exactly how addictive it can be.

BTW, i don't want to be a nit, but this should probably have been posted in "other gambling"...

Yea, well, my weakness is the “exactas” at the track.

You know, the more I learn about gambling, the less I want to gamble. I just love the challenge of poker, the battle I guess.

I think little bro has a problem and no clue about “smart” gambling. Time for serious talk.

Well, I think you have to be weird not to drink, but it does take it’s toll.

I'm not sure where good resources for this are, but GL... I personally reccomend that you advise him to take 50% of his win and put it in long term investments, and take the other half and use it to establish an "if i bust, i either quit, or admit i'm a junkie and get help" bankroll. tell him to never bring the plastic with him when he gambles, never borrow money, never bet more that 1/2 of 1% of his roll on any one bet, preferably less... send him here so he can play better and realize exactly how much/how fast he will lose...

although, if he really has a problem, none of this will help, and the only good advice is to quit now, and for good.

as for the horses... I only play beatable games, and i don't know a damn thing about horse racing. I bet on sports, though, and lifetime (since i got serious and started spreadsheeting and tracking everything, anyway), i've made several thousand in wagers, and i am up exactly 17$. yeeehaaa.
