Default Us or Them

I play limit 1/2 holdem online...and 3/6 - 4/8 live. I have more holes in my game than a piece of swiss cheese but still see even worse players everywhere I look. Do you guys think the majority of players read books, go to websites like 2+2, study the game, try to learn...etc. or do most people think they "get it" and just sort of splash around? It just seems like with the popularity of the game most people would be studying the game.

I think that more people are studying the game right now, just not most people. Most people still look at poker as nothing more than gambling...another take on blackjack or craps or what have you. They sit down with their chips and hope to get lucky, not knowing or really caring if they are playing properly. This is especially true in a proper casino, where you have the tourists who came to town specifically to "try their luck".

All of this is good, of course, because if everyone learned how to play poker well, it would no longer be a profitable game for anyone.

Most people playing 1/2 are generally just doing it for fun. I'm sure some of them may know about pot odds and such, but at such a low level most people are just playing for fun.

When you move up to $5/$10, at least half of your table knows all the basic stuff like starting hands, pot odds, check raising, etc.

1/2 is the limit of choice for small-time bonus chasers, tho, and most of them have a decent idea of how to play.

And there are still a lot of donks at 5/10, at least on Party.

Most people who play any game, poker included, don't study at all. They just want to pick up and play the game as soon as possible.

Study is hard. Working is hard. Playing is easy. What do you think 90% of people do with their poker time? Besides, I'd say at least half of them think that poker is some mystical thing that you can't learn anything about from a book.
