Should I have capped the river? [/ QUOTE ] Only if the SB is a complete maniac. And your river raise leaves a lot to be desired, as all you've got is top pair against a fairly coordinated board consisting of big cards people will call a raise with (AJ, TJ, AT, KQ, T9s to name most of them). The SB bet into you on the turn and river. I'm all for the turn raise with the blank that fell there, but when he bets into you again on the river, you have to give him credit for something. Call him down, don't raise. |

Only if the SB is a complete maniac. [/ QUOTE ] he did say it was pacific .25/.50....so this is actually a safe assumption you can make about a majority of your opponents before you even sit at the table. still, there's no reason to get hyper-aggressive here yet. there's plenty of time to determine if they are just plain idiotic and then you can happily value-bet away if you feel it's called for (and are okay with the variance....because even if he is a total maniac he will still stumble along a hand that beats you some of the time). |

[/ QUOTE ] Agree 100%, the #1 reason maniacs tend to last as long as they do is that they turn other people into maniacs. I've seen otherwise solid players just go absolutley nuts against a maniac with a hand they might normally not even play. Maniacs feed off destroying people's game and turning each hand into a crap shoot. Usually its best to let the maniac hang himself by letting him do the betting with just an occasional raise to grab an extra bet or 2. Wait him out and soon you will have a hand worth going to war with and you will be payed off nicely. |

Re: AQo Top Pair Hand
Well from what I've understood in SSH, you have to just bet the hands and not be afraid to lose an extra bet or two.

Re: AQo Top Pair Hand
Theres a thin line between making a calculated bet or raise and being wreckless. Most of the advice in SSH deals with playing in big multi-way pots, once you are heads-up it is often correct to slow down dramatically.

Not in a huge pot that was raised preflop with so many callers and my top pair. I think regardless of the outcome, I played it correctly

I think regardless of the outcome, I played it correctly [/ QUOTE ] I don't have a big problem with much of the hand, but the river raise is a clear mistake in my mind. At this point, you have either won or lost the hand so raising should only be done for value and I just don't see any value in raising with TPGK with a player behind you and a relatively coordinated board. This should be a textbook example of trying to get an overcall from the button. The fact that you are considering capping here is absolutely insane. |

Re: AQo Top Pair Hand
Maybe its a good spot for an overcall, but I wanted to take another bet from the SB since I didnt think BB or Button would call
