Default Radio Marketing of Online Gambling

1050 ESPN Radio in New York runs a lot of ads for an online sportsbook which will remain nameless. The commercials clearly promote how you can bet on sports and get quick cashouts, deposit bonuses and such. I was under the impression that you couldn't get away with being so bold about what you do on your site; thus the need for things like pokerstars.net.

These ads have been running for a few weeks now, so I'm guessing nobody is planning on trying to take these ads off the air. Similarly, ESPN is unlikely to take such ads if they think they could face trouble for airing them. Is there something about this situation that I'm missing?

Perhaps - but the online poker ads that run on that station are always for .net sites; I think the advertisers would notice the sportsbook advertisement and respond with much more profitable .com ads of their own.

I'm pretty sure the company you're talking about is BetOnSports. those guys already have a pretty shady history and worrying about .com vs .net regulations is the least of their concerns.

for that matter, any online sportsbook that is doing heavy mainstream advertising generally does not have a perfect business record, and that includes sportsbook.com as well. Other than Bodog, I have never seen nor heard an ad for any top-tier operations like Pinnacle, CRIS or BetJamaica. these guys save money simply relying on word of mouth from other knowledgeable punters.

the individual radio station is taking the risk. at some point they may get a letter from DOJ that suggests they cease accepting these ads.

i had a couple of newspapers i did very well with. the DOJ sent them a letter that basically states that they MAY be in violation of the wire act. the papers decided that my tiny revenue compared to their potential liability was not worth it and pulled my ads.

i explained that the wire act dealt with sports betting taken over the phone and not poker. the paper did not care that i may be right. it was not worth it to them.

advertising an online book is insane. the only person that was sentenced to real jailtime over internet gaming was prosecuted because of his sportsbook.
