Just purchased it yesterday and have been using it with Gametime+. I can already tell it's going to pay itself off very quickly.

If nothing else, it's worth the cost just for the accounting.

What are the similar programs out these days in place of Poker Tracker? What are the pros/cons?

If you're asking me, I don't know. All I know is there is something called Poker Office.

Don't expect to beat 2/4 and higher without PT and GT+.

Is this a trick question?

You're kidding, right? While I'm not there yet, I'd be very surprised if live updates and datamined information are required to beat those games. As long as you know how to pay attention to the table, I expect you can do just fine without the crutches. (Not to say that the crutches won't help if you're struggling.)
