Default CAUTION: when someone moves all in

This happened to me while playing 2/5 NL at the Trop this past weekend.

4 callers to the flop, I flop a diamnd flush, UTG bets, I call, other two fold. We are heads up, turn and river are no diamonds, except, I know Villain made his straight on the river.

He says "all in" and I say "call". I turn over my flush and he mucks. As i put out the $152 I had left so he can match up, Villain says "what? I check".

The dealer who is counting my chips turns and looks at Villain in confusion. I said, "you said all in!!!", he said no, "I said check"

To make a long story short, yelling ensued, the floor came over and listened to the dealers story, dealer says "he thought the vilain said all in" THOUGHT????

Ohter players didn't hear him as he asid it quietly, I heard as I was sitting next to him.

Floor says he can't do anything as the dealer was not 100% certain that Villain said all in and the other players didn't hear him.

OK, now, whatever, another $152, I'll live. But that is just dirty and wrong!!! talk about a scumbag move. and he had the nerver to call me "greedy". I swear, I was ready to knock this guy out.

BUT, after the incident, I realized, there are things that I could have done better:

1. When he announced all in, I should have waited for the dealer to count my chips and to match Villains chips with mine and move them to the middle of the pot.

2. I shouldn't have turned over my cards first as I called his all in bet.

I was mad at, obviously, Villain, but also the dealer, I remember last time, the same dealer was dealing a multiway pot and started mixing the remaining cards with the muck before dealing a river card.

So, i am probably stating the obvious here, but, next time a player moves all in, wait for the dealer to confirm and to count up the chips and move them into the pot or else you may get a sore loser scumbag like theone from this past weekend trying to cheat.

This is a horrible decision as both the dealer and the player involved took his action as an all-in bet. Some rooms insist that at least a portion of the chips be moved forward so avoid confusion. In general I am opposed to requiring the chips be moved, but in a room where verbal declarations are not binding (even though the rules say they are, if the floor is unwilling to enforce them they aren't).

The dealer described the action accurately if he said hte thought he said all-in. The player said something, and the dealer heard "all-in." That combined with a player acting as if he heard "all-in" is enough to rule that the player is all-in. As a player you should give the dealer the oppotunity to repat the player's action (this would be the time for someoen to object if they really didn't say all-in). A lot of these problems would be avoided if the players now playing NL (and the casino staf that spreads it) would learn the rules NL has been played under (allowing a player to complete their action) instead of forcing the game to be played under limit rules. NL is meant to be played at a deliberate pace rather than the rapid pace of limit poker.

The Good News: You've taken a sh**ty situation and found something you can use in the future. Congratulations. Don't often see that when someone posts a horror story.

Suggestion: Next time you're playing and this dealer pushes a pot to you, take the 1 or 2 chips you normally would have tipped him, hold them up and let him know "This goes towards the 152 you owe me. The balance is now ____." And don't forget to smile!

In this situation, I would say to the dealer, "He's all-in?" If the dealer says yes and he does nothing to protest right then and there, he will have no recourse (I would think) if you then call the bet.

Or "How much is it?"

No reason not to put a specific dollar amount on the bet before rushing to call it. (Even if you're calling no matter what that amount is.)

I think you've gotten the ways to protect yourself.

As to the situation -- the dealer probably screwed up, but if 'I "thought" I heard "all-in" is the best he can do honestly, it's the best he can do. The sc*mb*g (I'll buy some vowels,Vanna) who pulled a fast one has to live with himself -- as upset as I'd be, life's too short to worry about assholes.
