Lesson in how not to play the flopped nut straight
It seems as if there are a number of new players on this board, myself included. I thought I would share a hand history lesson in how not to play the flopped nut straight with no redraws.
I REALLY got too frisky when I potted this flop with just the naked straight, and it cost me. Notice that not only was Foyan freerolling on me, but a third player was drawing to a full house, and I was going to end up with 1/3 of the pot at best since three of us flopped the same straight. Come to think of it, this plays much like one of the example hands on Ribbo's site: Misplayed flopped nut straight $25 PL Omaha Hi/Lo - Sunday, October 30, 16:59:48 EDT 2005 Table Table 65757 (Real Money) Seat 6 is the button Total number of players : 10 Seat 1: mystentor ( $7.27 ) Seat 2: DonkeyWhoCan'tPlayADamnStraight ( $30.37 ) Seat 3: hippy56 ( $16.02 ) Seat 5: euler__ ( $25.33 ) Seat 6: jbl654654 ( $36.61 ) Seat 7: onobono111 ( $7 ) Seat 8: Foyan ( $5.92 ) Seat 9: brian6876 ( $28.25 ) Seat 10: richardc123 ( $21.65 ) Seat 4: jev_in_mi ( $25 ) onobono111 posts small blind [$0.10]. Re: Lesson in how not to play the flopped nut straight
And the really important paragraph from that page goes as follows:
In a situation like this, the way I would like to play the hand as the player with the straight is to check call the flop. Firstly my opponent might be freerolling me. Secondly he might have the same hand as me but with position, so if a scare card hits he can bet me off the pot. Thirdly, he might be bluffing, I want him putting money in if he is. Lastly, I want favourable odds. If I wait for the turn card, if it pairs the board or puts a flush on, I can fold having committed not many chips. If no scare cards hit, I can bet the pot or possibly check raise, ensuring with one card to come, my chances of winning increases significantly and that the money went in, with me ahead statistically. |
