top pair medium kicker
Should I start folding these. Usually I go to the river and almost always lose.... hey, I answered my own question!

Re: top pair medium kicker
UTG's flop raise into a big field suggests to me that he has a better hand than yours. Possibly K (better kicker), 2 pair or a set.
I would have preferred to check the flop and wait to see where a bet came from in this large field. If a bet came from early position into a lot of players that would suggest a reasonably strong hand, which I would either call down or fold to depending upon reads and the rest of the table action. However if a bet came from late position that might be from a weaker hand, I would raise to try to thin the field so that I could hopefully play the rest of the hand HU. |

Re: top pair medium kicker
Maybe I'm getting fancy, but I might check to try and raise a late position bettor against 7 people.

Re: top pair medium kicker
If my kicker was weaker, I'd definitely check and evaluate the action. If my kicker was stronger, I'd bet out. You're right in the middle. I think I still might check due to the size of the field. Hell, you might even wind up with odds to draw to a 3 outer.
Edit: As ak13 said, if I'm checking, I'm raising a LP bettor. |

Re: top pair medium kicker
I don't have a problem with the way you played it. TPMK is probably strong enough to lead this flop with given the board texture, and without a read I call down too once it's HU.
Checking the flop would be a reasonable alternative, and is a standard play with a smaller kicker. |
