For limit, I know a safe amount is 400bb, but I'm not sure about NL. Thanks.

Depends on how good you are. Start by just dabbing at the higher limits to get a feel for it and make sure you can win there too. Always make step-ups gradually.
Considering that you sit with 100 big blinds (50 big bets), you need more than 400 BB to play. Maybe 20 or so full buy ins is good, though I've heard 40 from other sources. Like I said, it depends on many things, not only on your skill, but also if you're playing for a living or just for recreation/side income. -Kings |

Thanks a lot.
I have been poking around in 100NL for a bit now, I find the games beatable. The only thing is that I have to get used to betting that much, so I'll take it easy to begin with and still play some 50NL along with 100. EDIT: Oh and I just play for fun and side income. |

[/ QUOTE ] This is a very important topic, and it's good that you've identified it. I found that I never got "good" at a new level unless I was completely comfortable with the stakes. If losing my stack on a tough beat was going to make me cringe because I just lost 100 bucks, I certainly was not going to be playing my A game. The trick is to adjust until you see chips, not dollars. -Kings |

I like to have at least 10 buy-ins to take a shot. If I get beaten up, I head back down to where I was. If I was to move up without having to go back down, 20 buy-ins should be enough.

My standard is 20, but I'm timid by nature.

I'm sure I'll get a lot of crap for this, but when I move up, I usually keep only 4 buy-ins in my poker BR. With 4 buy-ins, I can play 2 tables comfortably. I don't want 10 buy-ins and lose 500bb before I realize I should give up on that level. If I've lost 2 buy-ins, I can no longer buy into 2 games at the same time for the max. In that case, I know that I'm not ready for the step-up and move back down.

My rule is always have 10 buyins at highest level in reserve.
eg. $1200 = 2 tabling 100NL / 2 50NLs + 1 100NL. $2400 = 2-tabling 200NL / 2 100NLs + 1 200NL. $2800 = 4-tabling 200NL and so on. |
