Hand 1: Good turn check. Prevents him from testing you with air, and might induce a bluff from a hopeless hand. I would, however, bet the river. His check is likely defensive, meaning he wants to show his hand down, meaning he has something that isn't strong enough to bet, but he wants to call with, meaning he'll almost always call and will always be behind.
Hand 2:
If i'm counting right there are 6.5 big bets in the pot after he raises you, and you'll need to call 2 more. I suck at math but i'm guessing that means you need to be good 23% of the time or so to call this down. Against a commerce unknown, who might have 99 or A5, I think you're good often enough to call down.
