Don't work on your car in the street in a seedy neighborhood.
That snide-assed comment out of the way, get yourself extracated from the car, that way if it goes down, you're in a position to defend yourself.
End results: They offered you a beer after chatting you up. You drank it with them and learned a valuable life lesson.
