I think the "standard rule" is to politly/friendly tell the person once. If they are an ass about it, and/or continue to flash cards, I'd take it as an invitation to take their money.

Exactly! There is one more reason to tell them once: You don't want to be seen as a guy who "tries" to see other players cards. Even if you see them without making any special effort it my give you a low table image if others recognize whats going on.
