I think that 5-6 years ago, when the payroll was still the highest in the league, the Yanks needed to make the playoffs to turn a profit. Obviously that's changed.
But Steinbrenner also holds a good chunk of equity in the Nets and, I believe, a Japanese team. He's not going to be on the soup line anytime soon.
