Is it correct to pop it to 20 on the flop? If turn is unimportant card and i bet and get popped release or call down?

** Dealing the river: 9 of Spades

muckthenut raised - $20.00
fiasco folded
abbeboy raised - $30.00
muckthenut raised - $40.00
abbeboy called - $40.00
muckthenut shows: King of Clubs, King of Hearts
abbeboy shows: Ace of Spades, 9 of Hearts
abbeboy wins $278.00 from the main pot

Should i have merely called the 3 bet on the river? To be honest at this point i had put him on AA/QQ/JJ and thought i had very possibly 2 outed the turn. I have trouble putting him on a 9 since he called 15 cold PF, so is cap alright?
