Try some simple meditation exercises. Practice them regularly and use them while you are involved in a hand.
Im lucky it is easy for me to empty my mind at will because there is usually not much there anyway.. Counting your breaths from one to four and repeating while trying to exclude extraneous thoughts works good for me.
Different approaches work better for different people. Im sure a google search would come up with something useful.
