I would consider your experiments of playing live 1/2 NL. You might try staying over and playing 2 or 3 days straight. I don't think it is impossible to make $1K/week at 1/2NL. If you are successful at 1/2 though, you might try playing 2/5NL. If you can make a living at 1/2NL, you might do better at a higher level. I assume the guy playing 500 max was playing 2/5 (or maybe 1/3 or 5/10).
